The Allahabad High Court has stepped in to pause the conviction and sentence of a man found guilty in a 2017 murder case. The decision came after the court noted his clear intention to run in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. This move keeps his political path open while his appeal remains pending in the higher court.

A bench of two judges reviewed the criminal appeal filed by Nandlal Rai alias Babloo Rai. He was earlier convicted by the Varanasi sessions court in connection with the killing. The court granted him bail, highlighting his background as a political worker and active member of the Bharatiya Janata Party before the verdict.

The judges observed that staying the conviction was necessary to protect his right to livelihood and his chance to contest elections. They pointed out that politicians often carry special duties toward their supporters, and blocking their participation could cause unnecessary loss of opportunity. The order drew from earlier Supreme Court guidance on similar matters involving public representatives.

Rai had argued that he was not named in the original complaint and that his name surfaced much later in the investigation. The case involved the murder of a local activist linked to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, and Rai was said to have ties with a former gangster-turned-politician. His lawyers claimed the accusations rested mainly on suspicion rather than solid proof.

After weighing all arguments, the high court decided to suspend the conviction and sentence until the appeal is fully heard. This relief allows the appellant to move forward with his political plans without the immediate shadow of the earlier verdict affecting his eligibility.
